A launch event for the recent translation of Professor Franco Moretti’s book Bandiera nera. Forma tragica e guerra civile (Einaudi), published by Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu Press under the title Flamura neagră. Forma tragică și războiul civil. 

 

The launch will be followed by a discussion of the book featuring scholars Franco Moretti, Andrei Terian, and Ovio Olaru. The conversation will explore the limits of tragedy, possible definitions of the genre, as well as its roots and extra-literary implications. Far from asking whether tragedy is dead, as George Steiner argued, Franco Moretti goes on to tackle one of its most obvious contradictions: tragedy stages the greatest human horror—the taking of life—through some of the most beautiful language ever written.
