Helgard Haug and Daniel Wetzel - both graduates of the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Gießen - have been collaborating since 1995. Their work has gained recognition for sharp-witted interventions in public space as well as for documentary theatre productions and radio plays. They often work with “experts” as performers—individuals who bring their own biographies into theatrical contexts. Rather than simply representing reality or artificially dramatizing it, their productions reframe reality with new perspectives on stage.
In 2002, together with Stefan Kaegi, they founded Rimini Protokoll, a label for all their works no matter the constellation, that quickly became renowned for its postdramatic alternatives to traditional theatre and its reliance on dramatic texts. Many of their works incorporate interactivity and a playful use of technology.
Their productions take place in both the independent theatre scene and institutional venues such as state theatres, museums, and international festivals. Their work has been performed and exhibited at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Festival d'Avignon, Wiener Festwochen (Vienna), Théâtre de la Ville (Paris), Salzburger Festspiele, Under the Radar (New York), Ruhrtriennale, International Arts Festival Perth, Onassis Cultural Centre Athens, Luminato Festival Toronto, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, Royal Academy of Arts London, Museum of Contemporary Art Busan and many more.
Their work has been honored multiple times at the Berliner Theatertreffen, and in 2007, their production Karl Marx: Das Kapital. Erster Band won the Mülheimer Dramatikerpreis. That same year, Haug, Kaegi, and Wetzel received a special award from the German Theatre Prize DER FAUST, followed by the European Theatre Prize for New Realities in Thessaloniki in 2008. In 2011, Rimini Protokoll's body of work was recognized with the Silver Lion at the 41st Venice Theatre Biennale.
