Framed in the transitional period between the latter half of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century, the exhibition invites you to discover the importance of crafts in shaping communities, the often unseen work of common people, and to explore the stories of creativity and resilience that each object conveys.
For centuries, Transylvania has thrived on its own resources. The transition from medieval guilds to modern, more accessible, and progressive associations laid the groundwork for a technological evolution, reshaping production practices and improving the quality of life in both cities and the surrounding villages. Beyond artistic expression, the traditonal crafts have continued to significantly influence the cultural landscape of Sibiu, and that of Transylvania, as a European region.
The artefacts selected from the museum's collections, some exhibited for the first time, do not stand out for their splendor or aesthetic appeal. However, they are able to illustrate the dedication and ingenuity of the common people. Those who, through craft and tradition, with effort, skill, and care, have built their households and looked after their families, thus shaping the cities and villages of Transylvania and contributing significantly to the local identity.
Today, everything bears their imprint.
The exhibition has been honored this year by the Timișoara-based design studio Synopsismedia™ with the iF Design Awards 2025, one of the most respected design awards in the world often compared to the Oscars of the design industry. The distinction was awarded in the "Interior Architecture - Cultural Exhibition" category for the way the project transformed a museum space with design challenges into an interactive and engaging cultural experience.
