   23 OCTOBER 2020

“We Are Leaving”, by Krzysztof Warlikowski, for the first time in Romania, on Saturday, at #FITSonline

For the first time in Romania, the Sibiu International Theatre Festival streams the performance “We Are Leaving”, directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski, a production by Nowy Teatr Warsaw, in Polish, with Romanian, English, Russian, Lithuanian and Ukrainian subtitles. The show will be broadcast on the website of #FITSonline: www.sibfest.ro/fits-online, on Saturday, 24 October 2020, at 8 p.m., and the recording will be available on the website for 36 hours, until Monday, 26 October 2020, at 8 a.m.

Krzysztof Warlikowski returns to Hanoch Levin’s work twelve years after the premiere of “Krum”, a huge breakthrough in terms of the approach to the author’s work, as well as an extraordinary success in Warlikowski's career. This time, the Polish director chose the text “Suitcase Packers”. Since the first staging of Levin’s text, Polish and European has seen many dramatic turns. Once, Krum returned to his homeland after an unsuccessful expedition abroad, full of hope for fulfilment. Now, everyone is packing-up. This great world migration of peoples in Levin’s text finds its local face and local scale, reflecting all the anxieties and movements taking place at the macro scale. Levin’s characters are going down an unknown path, yet, undoubtedly, everybody is trying to leave as far away from “here” as possible, though nobody wants to leave home. When returning to his favourite authors, Warlikowski is never content with standard approaches. A rebellion is brewing, a fight of maturity against the attempted appropriation of its territory of freedom and imprisonment in peaceful regimes in exchange for submission. Even in the absence of politics, life is not peaceful, less so when times are troubled! Levin’s text, the starting point on which the show is built, offers a wonderful gallery of characters which will be brought to life by Krzysztof Warlikowski’s Nowy Teatr group of actors in Warsaw. The play’s subtitle - “Comedy with Eight Funerals” - sounds like the subtitle of a music piece and suggests the need to use an excellent “orchestra” made up of professional actors, such as those alongside whom Warlikowski has been working for years. So, we are leaving! It won’t be easy, but we will make no compromises. It’s time we left! Let's leave right now!
