Thomas Ostermeier and Schaubühne Berlin in the official programme of FITS 2016

The highest ranked European Director of the moment might be characterized by three recognitions: European Theatre Prize 2000, Herald Angel Award at Edinburgh International Theatre Festival 2002 and appointed “artiste associé” in the management of the Festival d’Avignon in 2004.

Thomas Ostermeier, one of the special guests of this edition, receives this year the official apreciation of Sibiu International Theatre Festival and is awarded a star on the Sibiu Walk of Fame.

Artistic Director of Schaubühne Berlin, Thomas Ostermeier presents in Sibiu The Marriage of Maria Braun, one of the numerous productions he has directed. The production is an adaptation of the 38th film made by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, presenting the story of Hermann and Maria Braun – a couple getting married in a town hall which has just been hit by a bomb during the World War II.
Two days later, Hermann has to return to the front. Maria waits, eking out a living and then receives the news that he is dead. She works in a bar and begins a relationship with a black GI. One evening, when she’s just about to go to bed with him, Hermann walks through the door. She strikes her lover dead. In court, her husband takes all the blame on himself and goes to jail for her.
In his place, Maria strives towards a better life. Towards a common future on the Big Day, the day of his second return. She learns the basic economic laws of the boom years of the just founded German Republic and believes herself to be in control of her emotional life which is, however, dictated by economic rules. A mistake for which she will end up paying a high price. This war after the War represents a society which is seaking disperately for the confort offered by money, only to forget the crimes and the defeats.

Thomas Ostermeier` career is impressive: since 1995 until now, he directed many productions and received awards in many countries. Belgrad, Berlin, Torun or Istanbul are only some places where the local communities felt the need to appreciate his work by awarding his productions.
In 2009, Thomas Ostermeier was appointed “Officier des Arts et des Leeter” by the French Ministry of Culture, and promoted to the degree of “Commandeur” in 2015. Moreover, he has been announced as German President of the Deutsch-Französischer Kulturrat – DKFR in 2015. In 2011, Thomas Ostermeier received the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale for his entire work. His productions are touring worldwide to places like Athens, Barcelona , Dublin, Buenos Aires, London Oslo, Moscow, New York, Quebec, Sidney, Tel Aviv orTokyo.
