“Radu Stanca” National Theatre in Sibiu, front runner regarding the number of projects in Romania financed though the Creative Europe Programme. “People Power Partnership” is the newly launched European project where the institution acts as partner.

The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Commission has selected the People Power Partnership project, with the Pan.Optikum Action Theatre as applicant and Leading Partner, within the framework of the “Large Cooperation Projects”. “Radu Stanca” National Theatre (TNRS) is one of the 14 partners coming from 11 European countries. The project has a total volume of 3.98 million euros and is 50% co-financed by the EU, and will take place during October 2020 – October 2024.

After the European project Power of Diversity (2015 – 2018), where TNRS was also a partner, this is the second time that a project of the “independent scene”, in connection with international festivals, has gained the trust of the international jury and the EU Commission. People Power Partnership is a participatory theatre project in public space, which enables real and sustainable encounters between young people in an artistic context. In the course of the project, 104 young adults (aged 18 to 25) from the twin cities develop 13 site-specific productions and one main performance, which will then go on tour to all twin cities and other interested festivals.

A real people to people project

In the first phase, eight participants that were previously selected after attending a workshop will each travel to a different twin city, where they will work together, for two weeks, with eight young adults from that city on a production for public space. This will be performed as part of a theatre festival. The themes of these plays will be developed for the public space and should consciously focus on socially relevant topics. In doing so, the young adults become authors themselves, i.e. they contribute to the productions with themes from their personal lives, which relate to questions of society, ecology, etc. As a unifying form of expression, hip-hop as an urban culture serves both as a physical movement content and as a musical realisation. This whole process that the participants go through is supported by the creative team.

In the second stage of the project, the participants develop a main production in Freiburg, in groups of eight people from four twin cities each, which builds on the first 13 productions. After the world premiere in Freiburg, they will present this production in various group constellations at all partner festivals. The production is designed for a tour, so that it can be shown internationally after the end of the project.

In addition, the partners support the exchange between the participants with intensive periods of work and the systematic examination of their concrete audience development strategies and participation activities within the project. This will be accompanied by the Freiburg University of Education (PH) with scientific evaluation and publication.

The project takes the term “public space” seriously and extends it to include virtual public space. In the context of the performances in all partner cities, a GPS-based gamification application bridges the gap between virtual spaces and analogous spaces.
