Mikhail Baryshnikov Has Arrived in Sibiu

One of the special guests of FITS 2017, Mikhail Baryshnikov, has arrived on Monday, 12 June, in Sibiu, anxious to attend some of the performances in the festival. He applauded, with the numerous spectators at BRD Scena9, at the performance “Vertigo 20” created by the choreographer Noa Wertheim, and met the President of FITS, Constantin Chiriac, for a warm discussion about details about their personal and artistic life, but also about the show that the artist will perform in Sibiu.

“I’m impressed by this festival, which is even bigger than in Edinburgh. I noticed that the whole city is involved. Art for the people and people for the arts, with so many young artists, but also older than me. I can’t wait to be here on stage, but also to see as many performances as possible”, said Mikhail Baryshnikov. As to the theme of the 24th edition of FITS, the artist said: “Art is like a disease, like playing golf. (...) I think that love and art go together like a glove. You cannot do art with hatred”.

On 13 June, the special section of contemporary circus began, with the event-performance “Human”, in which the vulnerability of a professional acrobat team was highlighted by a minimalist scenography. Suspenseful and sensational moments delighted the audience at Thalia Hall.

The Israeli season continues with “Yama”, the second performance prepared by Vertigo Dance Company, a performance that was full of inspiration, exploring the ecological human print, the dependency and the capacity of regeneration, by tracing the source of each movement and the effect it has on the environment. The audience was received, again, with joy and enthusiasm, the team of dancers led by Noa Wertheim, and their artistic act rewarded with prolonged rounds of applause.

Love has been highly regarded on the streets full of people at night, willing to enjoy the traveling artists. “The Hens!”, “The magic of carnival” or “Il Draaago” have brought many smiles on the faces of the spectators attending the performances.

On the sixth day of the festival, “Fanfara de la Cozmești” will be heard on Nicolae Bălcescu pedestrian street, and Pulcinella, the famous character of commedia dell’arte, will parade on the same street. The contemporary circus, through “Pss Pss!”, and the Israeli dance performance of Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company are part of the indoor series of performances, together with other performances such as “Inner Landscapes”, “Chicas PL” or „One-Many”.

The access of the audience to the street events scheduled at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival is free of charge. The access to indoor performances is based on tickets issued by the Theatre Agency in Sibiu, Strada Nicolae Bălcescu nr. 17, starting from 29 May to 2 June, between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.; on Saturday and Sunday, 3 and 4 June, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.; the Agency will be open between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on 5 to 18 June.
