Paris. The early 20th century. Something is up. Something dangerous mixed with a distinct smell of crude oil and corruption. Businessmen, stockbrokers and shareholders are plotting to blow up Paris in search of natural resources and oily treasure buried beneath the city. A quirky lot of "madwomen" are defying the ruthless capitalist horde: A makeshift trial and a staircase spiralling down into the unknown depths of a dark basement and a sentence is carried out - the evil erased! “The Madwoman of Chaillot” is a poetic, modern fairytale of colours, sounds, and strange figures. It is a magical bitter-melancholic satire, in which common sense, lust of life and love try to change a never changing world. Jean Giraudoux, a master of words and speech, manages through triviality and poetry with humor and depth to span the arc between tragedy and lightness. It is no coincidence he is regarded as one of the most important dramatic authors of the 1930-1940s, alongside Jean Cocteau, Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus.
