The play “Martyr” revolves around a teenager, Benjamin, who is being brought up by a single mother. Once he discovers the Bible, he finds all the answers to the questions that worry him. And he turns the Holy Script into the instrument of torture for those who surround him, because he thinks he’s the only one to know what is right and what is wrong. When criticized by his mother or teachers, he snaps at them with biblical quotes. He despises the minister who teaches at school for his shaky reputation and a weak ideological position, which becomes the subject of school arguments. It is only the teacher of biology who challenges Benjamin. When she starts studying the Bible thoroughly, she faces the student’s revenge... Thus a war between a teacher and a student breaks out. Marius von Mayenburg (born 1972) is a contemporary German playwright. His play “Martyr” was written in 2012. It was staged at Berlin’s “Schaubühne” the same year. The play consists of 27 short and defined scenes, which remind of a film script. Through the battle of ideas, the roles of extremism and religious beliefs in the society are explored. The play unfolds in a passionate and humorous tone and reveals the discrepancies lying within the Western society. The idea of the play was born in consideration of the obviously conflicting ideas in the Bible: the Holy Script talks about love for one’s neighbour and yet at the same time – about a sword that is meant for punishing. “Martyr” has been staged in many European theatres.
