Margareta Niculescu (1926-2018) was a Romanian producer, stage director, teacher, and one of the most influential figures in modern puppet theatre. As Artistic Director of the Ţăndărică Puppet Theatre in Bucharest from 1949 to 1986, she transformed the institution into an internationally acclaimed center for experimental puppetry, redefining the art form through innovation, poetic imagery, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her visionary productions, including Humour in Strings, The Book of Apollodorus, and Prince Charming Born of Tears, established puppetry as a sophisticated artistic language capable of profound cultural expression.
Beyond her stage work, Niculescu played a decisive role in shaping international puppetry education and cultural exchange. She founded the Puppeteer’s Studio in Bucharest, supported the creation of the International Institute of Puppetry in Charleville-Mézières, and established the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts de la Marionnette (ESNAM), one of the world’s leading puppetry schools. Active within UNIMA, the International Puppetry Union, she championed the global recognition of puppetry as a major contemporary art form. Her legacy continues to influence generations of artists worldwide.
