Eugène Ionesco (1909-1994), an important figure in the theatre of the absurd, made his mark on the world stage with his iconic works, such as The Bald Soprano, Rhinoceros and The Lesson. He was born in Romania but settled in France, where he developed a unique literary style, questioning language, the absurdity of existence and human alienation. His plays, with their caustic humour and lucid despair, denounce conformism and totalitarian excesses. A member of the French Academy, Ionesco leaves behind a theatrical legacy that is still alive today, in which laughter is intertwined with existential angst. He was posthumously appointed a member of the Romanian Academy.
