ACTING FOR FILM
Cathy Haase, an actress, author, and educator was born in Manhattan and grew up in Brooklyn and Queens, New York City, New York. She is a lifetime member of the Actors Studio and a member of the Studio’s Playwrights and Directors Workshop where she has workshopped and completed two of her plays—Over My Dead Body and Final Fugue.
She is known for her work in film and television: Another 48 Hrs with Eddie Murphy, The Ballad of Little Jo with Ian McKellen, CBS’ Madame Secretary and many others spanning all genres and budgets. Her theater work includes the regional premiere of Good People and Firewoman’s Lift acclaimed at the Edinburgh Fringe. She is a founding member of the English-Speaking Theater in Frankfurt, Germany and lived in West Berlin in the 1980’s where she was a part of the wild and vibrant film, theater, and music scene. Subsequently she learned to speak German and returns to Europe often to work.
Her book, ACTING FOR FILM, published by Allworth Press, and distributed by Simon and Schuster is in its second edition with a foreword by Ian McKellen. It is considered essential reading, especially for theater students aspiring to work in film.
Cathy has taught acting extensively and passionately for decades, starting as the assistant to Walter Lott (Actors Studio) and his marathon workshops. She was on the film faculty of School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City, where she taught aspiring film directors, screenwriters, and animators to act and develop characters. She was also producer and director of the Dusty Screenplay Readings. She has taught at MIT, City College CUNY, Dffb in Berlin, FABW In Ludwigsburg and at the Actors Studio Drama School, Pace University in New York City.
Cosmin Chivu is a stage director, educator, and arts leader with three decades of theatrical work across Europe and the United States. Since 2016, he has co-curated and moderated the Sibiu International Performing Arts Market (SIPAM), associated with FITS.
Chivu is known for developing new plays and reinterpreting Tennessee Williams's lesser-known works, including The Mutilated, Something Cloudy, Something Clear, Camino Real, The Remarkable Rooming House of Mme. Le Monde, and the world premiere of A Recluse and His Guest. His productions have received New York Times and Time Out Critic's Picks and a Drama League Award nomination for Best Revival. In the U.S., his directing credits include La MaMa, Lincoln Center Theater, HERE Arts Center, and The Cherry Lane Theatre, plus over twenty international festivals. In Romania, Chivu has directed at the Radu Stanca National Theatre in Sibiu, the Mikloși Arts Center in Timisoara, and ARCUB in Bucharest. He holds lifetime membership in The Actors Studio, NYC, and fellowships with the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, the Drama League, and the Old Globe.
A professor at Pace University's Sands College of Performing Arts, Chivu previously chaired The Actors Studio Drama School. He has taught at institutions across four continents, including the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Chulalongkorn University. He holds a PhD from Lucian Blaga University, Sibiu, an MFA from The New School, NYC, and a BFA from George Enescu National University of Arts, Iasi.
