Military Music of the Iași Garrison - Live Concert

MILITARY MUSIC FESTIVAL - SIBIU 2026

Over the course of its existence, military music has merged its purpose and mission with the tumultuous and heroic history of the Romanian people. It has become a faithful messenger of song, born from the sovereign belief in the love for and service to the homeland. Its music, destined to inspire the soul and actions of generations, has contributed to the protection and achievement of the most valuable assets of the Romanian people: homeland, freedom, justice, dignity, and national identity.

The Military Band of the Iași Garrison is a component of Romanian musical life, with initiatives and professional achievements that have gone beyond the military sphere, becoming part of the national artistic circuit. The first mention of military music in Iași, the cultural capital of Romania, appeared in the first Romanian newspaper in 1830, when, through the passionate writing of the scholar Gheorghe Asachi, the newspaper ”Albina
Românească” published the news of the establishment of the first military band with modern brass instruments and praised the patriotic gesture of all those who contributed to laying the foundations of the first musical unit necessary for the national militia.

The establishment, 195 years ago, of the first Romanian military music ensembles in the city of Iași represents an important moment in the history of Romanian music, marking the beginning of a period of national cultural development. Over more than 19 decades of existence, alongside their military duties (parades, ceremonies, etc.), military bands have cultivated and promoted Romanian and universal musical values among the public, becoming a true school of musical education for the people.

Between 1954 and 1956, the head of the Iași Garrison Military Band was Lieutenant Major Constantin COSTOIU, also a highly regarded composer of brass band music. At that time, the band consisted of 16 non-commissioned officers and, until 1960, it belonged to the 15th
Infantry Regiment Iași.

By bringing brass band music back to public attention, the Military Band of the Iași Garrison represents not only a sincere confirmation of its popularity, but also highlights the new valences and the distinct mission of this musical formation within contemporary cultural life.

The Representative Military Band of the Land Forces Iași – Romania has participated in various national and international festivals and competitions. Audiences in Bistrița, Brăila, Bucharest, Iași, or Krakow (Poland) and Modena (Italy), have been delighted by the virtuosity of military music.
