"Electra" Replaces "The Astonishing Story of Abu al-Hasan of Yemen and His Escape into the Wilderness" in the FITS 2026 Programme
A last-minute change has been made to the programme of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival. Electra, directed by Mihai Măniuțiu, will replace The Astonishing Story of Abu al-Hasan of Yemen and His Escape into the Wilderness, directed by Silviu Purcărete, in the programme of this year's edition, which opens on Friday, 19 June, in Sibiu.
Electra will be presented twice during FITS 2026, on 21 June, at 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
The programme change was made following the injury of one of the lead actors in The Astonishing Story of Abu al-Hasan of Yemen and His Escape into the Wilderness, making it impossible for the production to be presented during FITS.
The decision to include Electra in the FITS 2026 programme was also supported by the remarkable success the production has enjoyed over the past year in Japan, at Expo 2025 Osaka, and at the Antalya Theatre Festival in Türkiye, where it was enthusiastically received by both audiences and theatre professionals.
Spectators who purchased online tickets for The Astonishing Story of Abu al-Hasan of Yemen and His Escape into the Wilderness will automatically receive a refund to the card used for the purchase. For tickets purchased at physical box offices, refunds will be available through the Sibiu Theatre Agency.
The Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS), one of the world's largest and most important performing arts festivals, takes place this year in Sibiu from 19 to 28 June under the theme SOUL. The FITS 2026 programme features 848 events and brings together more than 5,000 artists from 83 countries.
