SIBIU, June 19th, 2025 – The 32nd edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival starts on Friday. FITS is preparing, this year as well, a great selection of outdoor performances, in addition to the indoor performances which bring Bill Murray, Kathleen Turner, Kuranosuke Sasaki and Alexandru Tomescu to Sibiu.
We are looking forward to a memorable edition with an impressive programme of street performances that will enliven the city for 10 days. The Big Square will host again important productions with high acrobatics, installations from Australia, fire shows, live music and spectacular scenic structures, including a 12-metre-high stylized human figure (part of “The Dream of Ymir” performance) or a 60-metre-long metal spiral (suspended by a crane of 200 tons) on which acrobats and musicians from the French company Transe Express will perform.
The outdoor program will be completed by visual installations, humorous artistic proposals, aerial dances, spectacular parades and artistic interventions that will transform the whole city into a veritable open-air stage.
The Small Square will become again an interactive space for people of all ages, with installations and games put in place by the Catalan company Tombs Creatius, made from recyclable materials, with circus performances and an immersive Spanish installation which brings the magical atmosphere of a glass globe in a spectacular format, with confetti tornadoes and electrifying rhythms.
“It is a continuous challenge to find the most spectacular street theatre, contemporary circus companies or installations through which we can surprise people. The public of Sibiu has seen a lot of great companies and has become, over the years, more demanding. It is a reason to be happy, but it is also a great responsibility. Fortunately, due to our year-round efforts and our membership of the Circostrada network, we are still able to bring important outdoor shows to FITS.” declares Dan Bartha-Lazăr, curator & coordinator - Outdoor Events.
Concerts will also be held in the Big Square by Hungarian royal Gypsy Orchestra (20th of June), Vița de Vie (21st of June), Vali Boghean Band (22nd of June), Pindu (27th of June), Mihai Mărgineanu & Band (28th of June) and Damian Drăghici (29th of June).
“Outdoor performances are the first contact between the public and FITS, so we try our best to bring important artists, who will delight the people of Sibiu and hundreds of thousands of tourists who come to witness the Miracle of the Art. From outdoor performances, a lot of participants get inside the theatre halls and discover another dimension of the Festival, in a mechanism that we have created in the last 32 years and that we refine with every edition.” declared Constantin Chiriac, the Festival President.
Pietonala Bălcescu will come alive with musical parades, African dances on stilts, batucada, samba and a special moment, “Fuga Lolelor”, brought for the first time during summer before the public. Huet Square will offer a more complex program starting this year, with performances for all ages, in a relaxed atmosphere.
Habermann Square and Parcul Sub Arini will host a variety of shows – from dance and flamenco to contemporary circus, acrobatics and fire shows, including a 5-meter-high tightrope walk. As in previous years, the Theatre Square will host the two spectacular multimedia shows with drones and lights, marking the beginning and the ending of the festival.
Highlights of this year include top companies from France, Italy, Spain, Australia and Germany, but also an extended presence of Romanian street theatre artists. Teatrul pe Roți, Circ Discret and Școala de Circ from Timișoara, PulsaR, Fanfara de la Cozmești, Asociația Elijah and hundreds of students from Sibiu will bring a boost of energy and originality to this edition.
