“The Spectrum” is a ritual-based contemporary performance that reinterprets the essence of Korean tradition through sound, space, and collective experience.
The work unfolds as a gradual transformation of energy, structured in five stages: Resonance, Texture, Rhythm, Ritual, and Expansion. Each stage represents a shift in perception, where sound evolves from a subtle vibration into a dynamic and shared force.
Beginning with Resonance, the performance focuses on breath, sustained tones, and minimal sonic gestures, creating a meditative environment that invites the audience into a state of deep listening. Texture introduces layered sound structures, where traditional Korean instruments and electronic elements intertwine, forming a dense and evolving sonic landscape.
As the performance moves into Rhythm, pulse and repetition emerge, generating physical intensity and activating the collective energy of the performers. This leads into Ritual, where structured movement and percussive interaction—particularly through Korean traditional performance practices—transform the stage into a shared ceremonial act.
In the final stage, Expansion, the boundaries between performers and audience dissolve as sound spreads throughout the space, forming a unified field of resonance. The dynamic movements and percussive energy of Korean traditional performance, especially samulnori, intensify the experience and bring the work to the culmination of a collective ritual. In this moment, performers and audience resonate within the same energy field, and the entire space becomes a living ceremonial environment.
Rather than presenting fixed compositions, “The Spectrum” emphasizes process, transformation, and presence. The performers do not simply execute music but embody sound as a spatial and physical experience.
As a non-verbal and immersive performance, it transcends language and cultural barriers, offering a sensory experience rooted in the essence of Korean tradition while engaging with a global contemporary audience.
Ultimately, “The Spectrum” redefines performance as a living system—where sound, body, and space continuously interact—creating a shared ritual that evolves in real time.
A hypnotic, immersive ritual where sound, body, and space become one.
