Comprising classical and popular virtuoso pieces, the repertoire of this unique duo explores both the nature and soul of Japan. Enhanced by the almost infinite range of sounds offered by the koto (Japanese zither), shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and shamisen (three-stringed lute), their music is both intense and wonderful.
Delicate and refined, the duo's repertoire consists of traditional pieces from the 17th to 19th centuries, the most peaceful era in Japanese history, as well as more recent compositions. Similar to a small chamber music ensemble, sankyoku refers to an instrumental trio consisting of the koto, shamisen and shakuhachi. This instrumental formation, which has become one of the most characteristic of Japanese musical traditions, offers each musician great possibilities for expression, very often using imitations or variations of the same melodic motifs. A performance like a refined soundscape, in which tradition and emotion flow together like a living musical haiku.
