George Banu in dialogue with Małgorzata Szczęśniak
MAŁGORZATA SZCZĘŚNIAK has been collaborating with Krzysztof Warlikowski since his first production in 1992 and has designed the sets and costumes for all of his dramas and operas. She has also worked with other directors, including Marek Fiedor, Grzegorz Jarzyna and Ewa Wycichowska, as well as contributing to television theatre. Szczęśniak has been a member of Nowy Teatr in Warsaw since its inception in 2008.

She took part in the 1990 Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space, the 1994 Exhibition of Young Set Designers in Katowice and the 2007 exhibition “The Reality of Transformation/ The Transformation of Reality” (curated by Paweł Wodziński) at the Prague Quadrennial and the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw. 

In 2008, a presentation of her designs was held in Brussels at La “Bellone” Maison du Spectacle.

The Association of French Theatre, Music and Dance Critics honoured Małgorzata Szczęśniak with the award for the best set design of the 2009/10 season for her work on the play “(A)pollonia.”
In 2011 Szczęśniak was a special guest at the 12th Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space.
In the summer of 2013 Nowy Teatr hosted an exhibition of Małgorzata Szczęśniak’s work entitled “Appearing and Disappearing without a Trace.”
