Emma Dante

Emma Dante is an Italian playwright, theatre and opera director, filmmaker, and author born in Palermo in 1967. Internationally acclaimed for her intense and visually powerful artistic language, her work explores themes of family, marginality, desire, and social tension through a poetic universe where tragedy and dark humor coexist. After graduating from the Silvio d’Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome, she founded the company Sud Costa Occidentale in Palermo in 1999, beginning a remarkable artistic journey that quickly established her as one of the leading voices of contemporary European theatre.
Emma Dante’s productions, including mPalermu, Carnezzeria, Le sorelle Macaluso, Bestie di scena, and Misericordia, have been presented worldwide and received numerous prestigious awards, among them several Ubu Prizes and international critical distinctions. Alongside her theatre work, she has directed acclaimed operas for institutions such as Teatro alla Scala, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and Opéra Comique in Paris, while her films Via Castellana Bandiera and Le sorelle Macaluso gained major recognition at the Venice Film Festival. Renowned for transforming stage and screen into deeply visceral and collective experiences, Emma Dante remains one of the most original and influential artists in contemporary performing arts.
