Thousands of people on the streets of Sibiu at the start of FITS 2018

The first day of the anniversary edition of Sibiu International Theatre Festival was marked by full performance halls and a sea of people gathered to watch the installations prepared by Compagnie Carabosse from France, which were installed in the Large Square, Cetății Park and Astra Park. The outdoor performances held in the new performance space, Habermann Market, were also attended by an impressive number of spectators.

Today, 9 June, one of the most expected events is the meeting between Octavian Saiu and Hideki Noda (artistic director of Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre) at Habitus Bookshop, starting at 11 AM. Playwright, director and actor Hideki Noda was born in Nagasaki in 1955; in July 2009, he was appointed artistic director of Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, and presently he is teaching at Tama Art University. Noda founded his first theatre company, Yume no Yuminsha (Dreaming Bohemian), while he was still a student at Tokyo University and he has produced a lot of popular plays.

Also on today's program, one of the event performances of this anniversary edition will be held once again at Sala BRD Scena9 from 4 PM: "The Three Sisters" by A.P. Cehov, directed by Timofey Kulyabin, from Novosibirsk State Academic Drama Theatre "Red Torch". It is a special performance played in sign language, translated in Romanian and English.

Gigi Căciuleanu's performance, "Aller-Retour", a collaboration between Gigi Căciuleanu's Romania Dance Company - Bucharest & Karma Dance Project – Paris, will take place at 6 PM at Filarmonica de Stat Thalia. "I have been working in Paris for several years alongside a company with a special profile called Karma Dance Project, which was created around an independent dancer, Alice Valentin. It is usually the choreographer who chooses the dancers he wants to work with. In this case, it is the reverse situation: the company chooses the choreographers it wants to work with. In order to be able to work with my company in Bucharest I have to make a roundtrip (Aller-Retour) Paris-Bucharest. This is where the idea for the performance came from. We thought that the time had come to unite the forces of these two independent companies to show the audience what we like and have in common: the love for Dance Movement and the respect towards the Performer. The performance <> is not only a French-Romanian production but also a profoundly European one. (Gigi Căciuleanu)

Within the American Democracy Series, at the Land Forces Academy, there will be a performance of "The Illiad" - a special performance for NATO military forces, followed by an audience discussion moderated by Octavian Saiu.

"Möbius", scheduled at 9 PM, at the Fortified Church in Cisnădioara, is part of the multidisciplinary project "Poetic Invasions of the Cities", which utilizes the artistic competencies and the strategic resources related to outdoor performances to develop innovative ways, involving a heterogeneous staff that is capable of transmitting the joy of more cultured artistic expressions to urban audiences in a readily accessible and popular fashion. Symphonic music, ballet and different types of theatre are reinterpreted and presented in a new way to the public of all social classes, outside the usual performance venues, bringing the performing arts in new spaces, searching for an unusual way of reaching a new public and shaping it through EU-specific actions.

"The Scarlet Princess", a production of "Radu Stanca" National Theatre, scheduled at Fabrica de Cultură Unicredit for 9, 10 and 14 June, directed by Silviu Purcărete, is based on an original script written by the same Silviu Purcărete, which uses as a starting point the kabuki play of Tsuruya Nanboku the 4th. Inspired by this theatre tradition, the director aims to create a European performance using the text, the rules and the space of kabuki, which have been reinterpreted in a personal manner. "The Scarlet Princess" has plenty of stories of obsessive love, murders, reincarnations and revenge. The performance approaches these themes with humor and self-irony in order to build a bubbly commentary on the dialogue between the European and the Japanese culture.
