The Sibiu International Theatre Festival 2015 final review

The 22nd edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival took place between 12-21 of June 2015 under the name „Growing Smart – Smart Growing”. During 10 days the city became a huge scene for 2673 artists and guests from 70 countries, who performed 427 shows in 67 locations, for around 65.000 spectators per day.

Constantin Chiriac, the President of the Festival, held a press conference at the end of the festival: „At the beginning of this festival we promised a memorable edition and it was memorable. In the first place, I want to say thank you to my team, because there are so many people behind this festival, who don’t get in the spotlight, but who are very important in making this festival what it is. Without them this miracle wouldn’t be possible. I also want to say thank you to everyone supporting this festival: the Sibiu’s City Hall, the City Council and the co-organizers: the University “Lucian Blaga” of Sibiu, to those who supported financially the festival: the Ministry of Culture, the Romanian Cultural Institute, the sponsors and last but now least to the people of Sibiu who are proud of this festival and of belonging to this community. I say thank you to the volunteers and to everybody who worked in the organization of the festival, in what concerns the tehnical part. I am also greateful for the audience, because we had an extraordinary audience, who filled all the venues, and as a result all the shows were sold-out. I’m closing this press conference with this thought: throught excellence we can build a state of normality. We don’t expect to be awarded, we work to show that in Romania great things can be done by willing, by beliving and by being able to do it.”

A team of 200 people took care of the good deployment of this festival, being completed by the artistic and the tehnical team of the Radu Stanca National Theatre, the students and the professors of the University “Lucian Blaga” of Sibiu and by the most dynamic group of volunteers of Romania, a community which reunited 300 youngsters. Besides the Romanian volunteers, to the success of the festival contributed a group of 27 international youngsters from Japan, Hungary, Bulgaria, South Koreea, Canada, Georgia, Germany and the Republic of Moldova.

This year we had 21.000 tickets on sale, which were all sold-out.

For sure, the most complex part of the organization of this festival is the tehnical production which involves a huge force mobility, taking into consideration the dynamic of installing all these productions. For this 22nd edition of the festival we used a lightening system of 900 KW and a sound system of 150.000 W, a crane of 65 tons and over 20 kilos of cables for installing the 87 tons of decor.

Each guest opted, on an average, to a 5 nights accommodation, in one of the 26 hosting locations, contributing, together with the tourists who came to Sibiu for the festival, to an important collectibility form the hospitality tax this summer.

This year we inaugurated five new stars on the Sibiu Walk of Fame for: KLAUS MARIA BRANDAUER, actor, film director, EIMUNTAS NEKROŠIUS, director, JOËL POMMERAT, playwright, director, NEIL LaBute director, script writer, and playwright and KAZUYOSHI KUSHIDA, playwright, director and actor. The event held on Saturday, the 20th of June, at 6 p.m., continued from 7 p.m. with a Gala which brought on stage the celebrities awared on the Walk of Fame or their representatives, but also the director Gianina Cărbunariu and the actor Marian Râlea who received for excellence in theatre the awards Iulian Vișa and Virgil Flonda. Also at the Gala, Joseph Melillo, Executive Producer at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) received from the festival organizers an award for the vision and the excellence in producing international artistic events.

The recognition of the festival’s partners who gave a considerable support in making this edition, was marked by the offering of two special awards for the company Takata and for the Raiffeisen Bank.

The Celebrity Gala is an event achived in collaboration with the Romanian National Television (TVR) and it will be broadcasted on Saturday, the 27th of June, at 9 p.m. on TVR 1.

The next edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival will take place between 10-19 of June 2016.
