The directors Joël Pommerat, Olivier Py and Armin Petras bring outstanding productions at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival 2015

The Sibiu International Theatre Festival takes further the promise to unwrap its hightlights! We have the pleasure to present you today three of the most important contemporary directors and the shows that they are bringing in the festival.

Joël Pommerat is one of the special guests of this year’s edition and he will be awarded a start on the Walk of Fame as a recognition of his amazing contribution to theatre. He is placing on stage only his own plays, believing that the directing and the text of the play should be elaborated during the rehearsals. Pommerat is trying to create a visual theatre, that is, at the same time, intimate and spectacular. With the production „the Reunification of the two Koreas” (presented at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival 2013) he won the Prize Beaumarchais/le Figaro for the Best Author, the Prize for the Best Performance at Palmarès du Théâtre and the Prize for the Best Production of a French Play. In 2015 he was awared the Prize for the Best World Production at the International Opera Awards with the opera „Au monde”.

This year, Joël Pommerat brings at Sibiu the show „Cinderella”, a coproduction Théâtre National de la Communauté Française de Belgique/ La Monnaie/De Munt, with two performances scheduled for Friday, 12th of June at 9 p.m. and Saturday, 13th of June, at 8 p.m., hosted by the Octavian Goga National College. Counting on the Belgium actors, on a concious writing and a cinematographic set (using the aesthetics of darkness, already a personal mark of the director, after the previous shows: „Le Petit Chaperon Rouge” and „Pinocchio” ), Joël Pommerat manages to provide some realism to the story, without losing its charm. Staging a huge success on the last season, „Cinderella” is a perfect show for both adults and children, at the same time, engaging anyone who refuses to decide between the dull reality of the adults and a childish spirit.

Teatro de la Abadia, one of the most important theatres in Spain presents this year, in the festival, the show „Towards Happiness”, a production created for the project „Cities on stage”, in partnership with the Radu Stanca National Theatre. Olivier Py, actor, director and manager of the Avignon International Theatre Festival, signs the text and the directing of the play. A man – played by Pedro Casablanc – wakes up in the middle of the night, affected by a premonition that encourages him to get dressed and to go run on the streets. His internal monologue is accompanied by a range of objects and shadows, but also by the live music of Fernando Velázquez, a film score composer („Ocho apellidos vascos”, „The Impossible”). The two performances of this show are scheduled for Thursday, 18th of June, at 10 p.m. and Friday, 19th of June, at 4 p.m., at BRD, Scena 9.

Armin Petras, one of the most important contemporary directors comes to Sibiu with two shows produced by Schauspiel Stuttgart Theatre, where he is the manager starting the last season: „The visit of the old lady” and „5 mornings”. Also, he is preparing a show in coproduction with the Radu Stanca National Theatre: „Nathan the Wise”. With an outstanding directing career, in Germany and around the world, Armin Petras was the manager of the Leipzig Theatre, then the manager of the Schauspiel Frankfurt Threatre. „The visit of the old lady” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, a coproduction Schauspiel Stuttgart - Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin is scheduled for Sunday, 14th of June, 9 p.m., at Casa de Cultură a Sindicatelor – Sala Mare.

Armin Petras also works as a writer under the pseudonym Fritz Kater and the text of the play „5 mornings” belongs to him. Fritz Kater places the action of the play during a catastrophe. The city is on alert. Was it because of an explosion? Was it because of a radioactive contamination? A dangerous virus? The perception that the whole society is exhausted? Nobody knows. Aparently, no outside enemy is responsible for this. A show with an impact, that is scheduled for Wednesday, 17th of June, 9 p.m. at Radu Stanca National Theatre, Sala Studio.

„Nathan the Wise” (originaly by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing) is the result of one of the biggest projects that the Radu Stanca National Theatre had in coproduction with the Schauspiel Stuttgart National Theatre. The purpose of this project is more complex than just to stage a play. It brings up the social dimension of the terrorism and the racism in these two countries. The cast is consisted of renowned actors like Ofelia Popii, who was awarded in Romania, Scotland (Edinburgh) and Japan, Peter Kurth and Katharina Knap, both actors at Schauspiel Stuttgart National Theatre, who received awards like „Best actor of the Year” and „Best new actor” in Germany. The premiere of the show is scheduled during the festival, on the 15th of June, 10 p.m, at the Radu Stanca National Theatre and later on, there will be a premiere at the begining of 2016 at the Schauspiel Stuttgart National Theatre and also some performances at the National Theatre in Oslo.
