The Concerts in Transylvanian Saxon Churches section will also be found in the FITS 2018 programme

A unique section on the Sibiu International Theatre Festival is that of the concerts and musical events held in the fortified evangelical churches of Transylvania. From Sibiu to Criț, the places of worship will be enriched with important artist from the national and international musical scene, through the special events meant to bring tranquillity to those who choose them.

Among these events we can find Fado at the Church with Cristiano de Sousa, “a son” of Fado music. For many years his family has been connected to the music in Lisbon, bringing him close to fado music. As such, ever since he was a child, Cristiano has had the honour of singing with the most important fado singers from the industry. He has met personalities such as Fernando Maurício (the king of fado music), Celeste Rodrigues (sister of Rodrigues de Amalia), Artur Batalha (named the prince of Lisbon music). In 2007 Cristiano won the prize offered by the Great Lisbon Fado Gala. He has held concerts in the entire country and has participated in one of the most important music festivals in Portugal (Rock in Rio Lisboa). He has also held performances in France, USA, Germany, Holland, Jordan, Russia and Great Britain. In 2012 Cristiano recorded his first album, “Fados do Meu Fado”, and was invited to join the musical team “Café Luso”, which is the Cathedral of Fado music in Portugal where the fado star, Amália Rodrigues recorded a live concert. To listen to Cristiano de Sousa means to live the words of Fado music and to feel the stories of poems.

An extraordinary organ concert is that held by Jürg Leutert. Born in 1964 in Richterswil (Switzerland), he went to high school at the Einsiedeln Abbey and took organ lessons from father Hansjürg Leutert, Verena Lutz, Bert Matter, Rudolph Meyer and Jean-Claude Zehnder. Together with his wife he has lived in the Lofoten Islands in the north of Norway, while also working with her as an organist, choir conductor and music teacher. Leutert has taught all stringed instruments at the local school and has founded a string orchestra for children. He has also been assistant to the organ constructer F. Stemmer, and took part in the restoration of several organs in Austria, Transylvania and Norway. The two artists have been living in Sibiu since 2015. Leutert conducts the “Hermannstädter Bachchor” choir, while also being responsible of the music in the Evangelical Church, at a national level. There are many classical organs and music which he must handle.

Another organ concert scheduled at the 25th edition of FITS is held by Helmut Deutsch, organ professor at Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart (Stuttgart University of Music). He has sustained numerous tours in most European countries and has travelled to Russia, South Korea and Japan. Deutsch is also summoned as a jury member for the international music competitions (International Organ Competition St. Albans, Grand Prix André Marchal Biarritz, Mendelssohn Competition Berlin, among others) and hold organ interpretation workshops in Germany and other countries(at International Organ Academy Haarlem and faculties in Berlin, Danzig, Köln, Copenhagen, London, Seoul, Tokyo). Helmut Deutsch has transcribed important orchestra and piano scores for organ, such as: Jean Sibelius, Symphony No.2 in D major op. 43 (ordered by Kyoto Concert Hall Society); Franz Liszt, Les Préludes (Bärenreiter); Après une lecture de Dante (Schott). During 2000 and 2013, before being offered a teaching position in Stuttgart, Helmut Deutsch taught organ at the Freiburg University of Music. From 2004, he is a regular guest lecturer at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The central point in his performances is the intense interaction with historical organs from different stylistic periods and of different origins, as well as his interest in the variety of instruments and music.
