Sasha Waltz brings the essence of movement on the stage of Sibiu International Theatre Festival

The SASHA WALTZ & GUESTS Company presents Friday, June 7th, at 9 pm, the dance show ”Continu”. The event will take place at the Trade Union House of Sibiu, as part of the 20th edition of Sibiu International Theatre Festival, happening this year between June7th- June16th.

Renowned for the high standards of her choreographic creations which combine  dance elements with theatre and music in a very original concept, Sasha Waltz is one of the most successful women in the world of contemporary dance. The German artist has been awarded numerous prizes for her creations, among which one of the most important cultural distinctions in France- ”Officer of the Arts and Letters Order”/ ”Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres”, as well as ”The Federal merit Cross”/ ”Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande” of the German Federal Republic.

Sasha Waltz has studied dance in Amsterdam and New York, and in 1993 has founded the company bearing her name. Between 2000-2005 she was part of the artistic board of Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz Theatre and until now her company counts 18 shows which have been presented on the most important stages of the world, as well as a rich portfolio of colaborations with over 250 artists and companies from 25 countries.

In ”Continu” the choreographer brings the dance performance back to the pure essence of movement, space and music, perfectly underlining the combination of imaginary and dramatic. The performance which will take place in Sibiu represents one of the reference points of this year’s edition of Sibiu International theatre Festival, involving primary impulses previously explored by Sasha Waltz in major projects held for museums in 2009- the artistic inaugurals of David Chipperfield at Neus Museum (in Berlin) and of Zaha Hadid at MAXXI Museum (in Rome). Since its premiere, which took place in 2010 at Schauspielhaus in Zürich, the performance has been revised several times and in the summer of 2011, in Salzburg, Sasha Waltz  presented the final version, created with 24 dancers on stage. The beginning of the new version includes the percussion solo”Rebonds B” by Iannis Xenakis, which will be interpreted by Robyn Schulkowsky. The simphonic piece ”Arcana” by Edgard Varèse represents the musical keynote, adjoined by other compositions realized by artists such as Iannis Xenakis and Claude Vivier. The cost of a ticket is of 20 lei, 15 lei respectively for students and retirees, in the limit of available seats. They will be sold on the official website of the event, sibfest.ro, starting from the beginning of next week.

Sibiu International Theatre Festival is the most important performing arts festival in Romania and the third one in Europe as spreading and dimension. For 10 days over 2500 artists and producers from all over the world present 350 events taking place in 60 venues from Sibiu.
