Premiere at FITS 2018: a volunteer was co-opted in a performance of a guest company

Iulia Mărăcine, a first-time FITS volunteer from Bucharest, was co-opted by Percussion de Strassbourg dance company.

Iulia, 24 years old, is a dancer and choreographer and a graduate in Performing Arts from the Royal Center School of Speech and Drama in London. She is currently a university teaching assistant in Bucharest and she decided to attend FITS in order to recover after the surgery she has recently undergone. Assigned as a volunteer in the department for guest companies, she met the members of Percussion de Strassbourg, who are scheduled to perform "Ghostland" on 14 June at Colegiul Național „Octavian Goga”.

Due to an injury suffered by the dance company's soloist, Iulia Mărăcine was co-opted in the group and employed as a collaborator during her participation at FITS.

"R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots)", a TNRS performance supported by Allianz Țiriac, is also scheduled for 14 June. "R.U.R. is a science-fiction theatre performance, a view into a dystopian future in which our obsession with technological progress brings us to ruin. It’s the first script that has advanced the idea that society will manage to create artificial intelligence, mechanical replicas of humans that will work in our place. A society with masters and slaves, in which man plays God and creates machines with souls. We have tried to generate on stage a world of the future on the brink of the apocalypse, a world that speaks about the present-day us, about a sterile society, devoid of affect, compassion, obsessed with robot-people, in which you gradually lose your identity", says director Vlad Cristache. The performance is constructed as an installation-concert, using as soundtrack the music of the band Kraftwerk, the fathers of electronic music.

"The Tree", directed by Eugenio Barba, dedicated to Inger Landsted (part of Odin Teatret), will be performed at Cercul Militar on 14, 15 and 16 June. Two story-tellers introduce and comment upon characters and events: in the Syrian desert, two Yazidi monks plant a pear tree to call back the birds that have disappeared; in Nigeria a mother rests under the shadow of the tree of forgetfulness holding in her arms the head of her daughter hidden in a gourd; a European warlord explains the necessity for ethnic cleansing to an African warlord who performs a human sacrifice to make his army of child soldiers invulnerable before leading them into battle; a girl plays with her dolls around the tree her father planted when she was born, wondering how birds see the earth from the air.

Biserica Fortificată Cisnădioara is also preparing to host for three days (14, 15 and 16 June) an event performance: "Atsumori". This classical play, written by the patriarch of Noh - Zeami, is a true representative of the values and worldviews of the samurai society that established Noh as a dramatic genre. The story takes place in late 12th century, some time after the end of the bloody war between the Genji and Heike clans.

To make the morning better, Julius Meinl provides the coffee during the daily press conferences held at Habitus Bookstore.
