Impressive opening of the 24th edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival

The 24th edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival started enthusiastically on Friday, with exhibitions, workshops for actors and dancers, seminars and conferences. Thus, the Faculty of Letters and Arts, the GONG Theatre, the Sibiu City Hall, the “Împaratul Romanilor” Hotel, the Contemporary Art Museum, Casa de cultură a studenților and the Habitus Bookstore hosted works of decorative art, painting and photography, while Dorte Lena Eilers – publisher of the “Theater der Zeit” magazine – dialogued with Octavian Saiu.

The indoor events brought together hundreds of people to the scheduled performances, concerts and movies. “The Bald Soprano”, “A Woman”, “Transylvanian Pipe Organs… A Journey to the roots”, “I Love Peach Blossoms”, “Migrants or We Are Too Many on This Damn Boat”, “Lecture on Nothing”, “Bonfire”, “Minetti”, “Air Condition”, “Hydra”, “The Chocolate Soldier”, “Rocky Horror Show”, and “Solo Goya” delighted performing arts lovers.

For the audience on the Nicolae Bălcescu Pedestrian Street in Sibiu, FITS started with energetic performances held by Cie Remue Menage and Waka Chire Bând, while Geschwister Weisheit — High increased the level of the spectators’ adrenaline in the Big Square of the city. Misia, the delightful Portuguese artist, brought peace and charm in everybody’s soul in a thrilling concert in which she crossed the musical road from fado to tango.
The first evening of FITS 2017 ended with the traditional fireworks offered by the organizers to all those who, during these days, witness the joy of giving love through the performing arts.
“The first evening of the festival revealed a moon as large as our heart, a celebration of our theme in this year, love. FITS brings joy to all the participants, as usually: all of our tickets have been sold for today’s performances, and we hope this honest, pure and real gift, namely the Festival, will continue to be preferred by all those who are in Sibiu in this period.”, stated the FITS President, Constantin Chiriac.
The 10th of June is at least as spectacular in terms of the scheduled events. George Banu will be in dialogue with Robert Wilson at the Habitus Bookstore. At the Evangelic Church in Cisnădie, a special pipe organ concert will be heard, while “Metamorphoses”, Silviu Purcarete’s event-show, will be staged at Fabrica de Cultură starting 9:30 p.m.
Those who love street performances will not been forgotten; the events will start on the Nicolae Bălcescu Pedestrian Street starting early afternoon (1:00 p.m.), with a traveling story: “The Fairy and the Woodcutters”, and will continue with other joyful and energetic performances.

The access of the audience to the street events scheduled at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival is free of charge. The access to indoor performances is based on tickets issued by the Theatre Agency in Sibiu, Strada Nicolae Bălcescu nr. 17, starting from 29 May to 2 June, between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.; on Saturday and Sunday, 3 and 4 June, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.; the Agency will be open between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on 5 to 18 June. Tickets can also be purchased online on, or from the national network of Germanos, Orange and Vodafone stores, and from Humanitas and Cărtureşti bookstores.
