Don’t miss out on this year’s last performances of Purcărete’s “Faust”

The “Radu Stanca” National Theatre of Sibiu presents on Sunday, May 18, 20:00, at Hala Balanța in Sibiu, this year’s last performance of “Faust” directed by Silviu Purcărete. This performance will precede the three extraordinarily scheduled performances during Sibiu International Theatre Festival, and the performance will afterwards be scheduled once more in the spring of 2015.

“Faust” is more than a theatre performance. Violent, moving and visceral “Faust” invites its audience to have a powerful individual experience of knowledge, belief, pain and love. Silviu Purcărete’s “Faust” distinguishes itself through the complexity of its directing vision: it is an extrasensory experience at the border between Earth and Hell, with scenery amplified by projections, fireworks, live rock music, dozens of actors and dancers and an original soundtrack by Vasile Șirli. The cornerstone of this modern Faust is improvisation, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s text representing the starting point for an exceptional theatrical composition. The script of the performance in Sibiu captures key moments of Goethe’s text: Faust’s pact with the Devil, Faust’s lust for Margareta, the Walpurgis night and Faust’s ascension to the Heavens. This performance distinguishes itself through its stage setting and light design -an impressive evocative force, its suggestively tantalizing costumes, both elegant and burlesque, its sound effects- adequate for its funambulist ambiance, its video projections- ingeniously articulated into the architecture of the entire scenic undertaking, all created on a monumental scale through the acting of over 120 actors and extras in a decommissioned industrial plant. An important landmark for post 89 Romanian theatre, “Radu Stanca” National Theater’s production significantly contributes to the promotion of national cultural values. This has been confirmed both by awards and the tours it has been on: the award for best actress in a leading role ( Ofelia Popii) and the award for best stage design ( Helmut Stürmer) at the UNITER Gala in 2008, it was also present at the Goethe Festival in Frankfurt in 2008 and was officially selected for the International Festival in Edinburgh in 2009. It also received the 2009 Herald Angel Award and the 2010 UNITER Gala Excellency Award, with an extraordinary performance in 2011 in Brussels, with European Commission President José Manuel Barroso in attendance as an honored guest. It was also invited to be part of Maribor European Culture Capital of 2012 Program.

The three performances scheduled during this year’s edition of Sibiu International Theater Festival- June 6th-15th- are scheduled as follows: Friday, 6th of June, 22:00, at Hala Balanța Sibiu // Saturday, 7th of June, 22:00 at Hala Balanța // Sibiu Sunday, 15th of June, 22:00 at Hala Balanța Sibiu
