Diversity rules on the streets of Sibiu on the occasion of FITS 2017

The Sibiu International Theatre Festival is well-known for the special attention it pays to the street theatrical performances scheduled throughout the event, dedicated to the local community that has strongly brought its contribution to the development of the festival and to the tourists travelling in Sibiu during the period 9-18 June, 2017.

“Street performances are one of the major highlights of this event and their quality has increased with every edition. The Main Square, the Bălcescu pedestrian street, the Small Square as well as other outdoor locations are hosting the most important street arts companies that create the charm, emotion, and suspense associated with this Festival every year.” Constatin Chiriac, President of FITS.

It is Cie Remue Menage, the French Theatre Company, that will begin the outdoor performance shows upon the 24th edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival. „Abysses” is a light parade carried by the rhythms of the Taikos and by electro sounds, accompanied by jellyfishes, sparkling stars, a majestic seahorse, and some Sea Devils on stilts. The succession of circus, music, fire and pyrotechnics merges the public into a universe where the sky and the sea switch places.

„Deambuloscopy” have come from France to instil life into the Nicolae Bălcescu pedestrian street, merging mechanical installations with circus elements, music and theatre. The creations of the P.I.P.O.T.O.T.A.L Company draw inspiration from the world of dreams and are under the sign of fireworks.

Comparsa Las Monjas bring us „The Magic of Carnival”! Bursting with energy and enchanting us through dance and music, this performance is a dive into an explosive blend of colours. The youthful while extravagant atmosphere is led by 100 members who vibrate with excitement.

Teatro Laboratorio Isola di Confine combines elements of the Commedia dell’Arte with pop and classical music. „The Rhythm of Pulcinella” is a fantastic journey into Italian street theatre: improvisation, masks, music and enjoyment - these are the elements that define this show!

Coming from South Korea, „The Fairy and the Woodcutter” takes us on a rendezvous with a 6 metre-tall giant puppet, stags that spring on stilts, a robot rooster and the Smiley Faces Family. The traditional South-Korean fairy-tale “The Woodcutter and the Fairy” meets the audience on the street through theatrical reinterpretation.
This year as well, the street performance is supported by Banca Transilvania.

We dedicate four days of festival to one of the world's leading circus creators, David Dimitri, an initiative that FITS intends to pursue over the following years with other similar companies. It is a gift offered by the festival to the Sibiu community (and not only), being the first show of the kind that takes place under a circus tent, at the Sibiu Hippodrome, on Strada Vasile Aaron nr. 20.

The “Circus Man”, an event presented by Dedeman, is a contemporary circus show created and performed by one man, without animals and without any other type of stage support, being an innovative combination of acrobatics, tightrope walking, music and trapeze. His performance may be considered as the manifesto of an “insanely gifted” artist (as the famous Maurice Béjart said) who wants to perform the most daring circus show of all time. Featuring David Dimitri, the Circus Man will run every day from 15 to 18 June, as follows: Thursday, June 15 and Friday, June 16, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, June 17, starting with 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, June 18, at 1:00 p.m.

The access of the audience to the street events scheduled at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival is free of charge. The access to indoor performances is based on tickets issued by the Theatre Agency in Sibiu, Strada Nicolae Bălcescu nr. 17, starting from 29 May to 2 June, between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.; on Saturday and Sunday, 3 and 4 June, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.; the Agency will be open between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on 5 to 18 June.
