“Brodsky/Baryshnikov” – An Absolute Success at FITS 2017

One of the most awaited performances at the 24th edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival, “Brodsky/Baryshnikov” – based on the poems of Joseph Brodsky, directed by Alvis Hermanis and interpreted by Mikhail Baryshnikov, has been received with great joy by the audience at Radu Stanca National Theatre in Sibiu. A moving interpretation of Brodsky’s texts, a minimalist stage design and dance moments in the artist’s unique style – these are some of the ingredients that made this performance memorable.

Yesterday, David Dimitri, circus-man, staged his first representation of five performances that are scheduled to delight us at FITS 2017. This is a one man show in which he has catapulted himself from a cannon, with fire, on a rope, then he walked on a wire suspended at approximately 20 meters from the ground, thus raising the adrenaline levels of the audience at Baza Hipică in Sibiu.

The second representation of “Horses in the Sky” presented by Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company, was performed in front of a very receptive audience. The touching story imagined by the choreographer Rami Be`er has been highly appreciated by the audience at BRD Scena9.

“There is no right or wrong in appreciating contemporary dance. At the beginning of the dance, the spectator is led to a certain point, but then, it’s up to everyone’s imagination to give the performance a meaning. (...) Movement is a means of communication, a bridge for people with different nationalities, pasts or religions. Without too many words, we can create a dialogue, and this is our contribution: we are trying to create a better world”, said the choreographer.

Friday, 16 June, during the last week-end of FITS 2017, there will be large number of street performances on Nicolae Bălcescu pedestrian street, in the Small and the Big Square. “Metamorphoses”, Silviu Purcărete’s performance, will meet the audience once again for the last time in Sibiu. The production will be staged once again in Romania, in Constanța, at the end of July. “Metamorphoses” will move to Esch indefinitely, as part of the cultural exchange between Sibiu and Luxemburg celebrating the 10th anniversary since Sibiu was European Capital of Culture, alongside Luxemburg.
