Barak Marshall, Jin Xing și Brenda Angiel bring fascinating dance performances at the Sibiu Internationl Theatre Festival

This summer we dance in Sibiu! The Sibiu International Theatre Festival is looking forward to please you with provocative rhythm and sonorities, provided by artists and companies from three continents. Today we introduce to you three exceptional choreographers: Barak Marshall (Israel), Jin Xing (China) and Brenda Angiel (Argentina).

Barak Marshall is one of the most inovative choreographers in Israel, awarded ever since his debut in 1995, when he won the 1st prize in the competition „Shades of Dance”, organized by Suzanne Dellal Centre. His company, Inbal Dance Theatre made a huge European tour, which included performances at The Dance Biennale in Lyon, at Théâtre de la Bastille in Paris and Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. In 1999 Barak Marshall was selected by Ohad Naharin to be the first-choreographer in residence at Batsheva Dance Company, creating many of its productions. In the last years he collaborated with the Suzanne Dellal Centre, the Montreal Jazz Ballet and the dance company BodyTraffic, from Los Angeles. For the show „Wonderland” he signs the choreography, the scenography, the music and the text. „Wonderland” follows the journey of ten souls stranded in a no-man’s land. They struggle to overcome forces – both personal and existential – in their attempt to accept their fate. Marshall’s movement is physical, sharp, fast, contains ethnic-contemporary motifs and is known for being highly emotive, visual and theatrical. The score for „Wonderland” combines elements of Gypsy, Balkan, jazz standards, Yiddish and rock music. The performance is scheduled for Wednesday, on 17th of June, at 6 p.m. at Cultură a Sindicatelor Sibiu – Sala Mare.

Jin Xing is the manager of Jin Xing Dance Theatre Shanghai Company, created in 1999, as the first independent dance company in China. With a very special destiny, Jin Xing is a symbol of courage, liberty, reponsability and unstoppable energy of the artistic spirit. „Different Loneliness” is the latest of around 20 choreographies Jin Xing created for her company since its establishment in 1999. This creation presents 9 musicians from Inner Mongolia and 15 company dancers simultaneously on stage. Dancers enter into a dialogue with the musicians and the musicians perform a substantial part of the choreographic movements. The narrative arch of „Different Loneliness” is that of an ongoing stage rehearsal. The voice of the artistic director can be heard from the off scene while dancers and musicians do repetitions and try-outs or enter discussions with the rehearsal director. From this working environment, solo performances, duets between singer and dancer or iconic group scenes spin off. Thanks to the soulful Mongolian music the performers recall and the audience is drawn into the scenery of the vast Mongolian grasslands. The performance is scheduled for Thursday, on 18th of June, at 8 p.m., at Casa de Cultură a Sindicatelor – Sala Mare.

Brenda Angiel is the artistic manager and the choreographer of the Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company. The Argentinian artist revives one of the most popular dances in her homeland, using the methode of aerial dance. With the aid of strings and elastic cords, she’s creatig a new space, the aerial dance having its own vocabulary. By adding different rhytms of the most popular Argentinian muzical style, inspired by the famous tango step, the show „8cho an Aerial Tango” is perfomed by the talented Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company. Brenda Angiel and her company have travelled the world, performing in the Netherlands, Italy, Mexico, China, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Argentina, Boston, New York City and at some of most prestigious festivals in the United States, including the Spoleto Festival, Kennedy Center’s American Festival, and the American Dance Festival, Brooklyn Academic of Music to name a few. The music is performed live by an orchestra consisted of 7 musicians. The show is scheduled for Saturday, on 20th of June, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, on 21st of June, at 4 p.m. at Casa de Cultură a Sindicatelor - Sala Mare.
