When Hamlet takes a day off from “Hamlet”, Elsinore falls into. This performance by the students in Iași is an intertextual approach to the famous drama, combining key fragments of the original text and the perspective proposed by Aldo Nikolaj in his “Hamlet in Spicy Sauce”. The balance between the two worlds, that of the Shakespearean characters and the clattering group of palace cooks, becomes a good opportunity to highlight the inherent problems of the stage process. In fact, “Hamlet it be” puts forward the steeplechase of a class of student-actors in their desperate attempt to face a crisis other than the one imagined by Shakespeare: actors’ conflict beyond characters. Is it theatre, is it life? That is the question! Together, we look for the answer in a balancing act on the line separating the two, which grows thinner and thinner before our eyes.
Performance in Romanian, with translation into English.
