“The Dance of the Imperial Penguin” tells the tragi-comical story of two elderly people living isolated in their own second-hand store. Since their children left the country to work abroad, the two teachers live alone and every day they live the clocklike routine of taking their pills. This ritual seems to help them survive but, in the end, pushes them to an inevitable End.
Starting from a text reading, rehearsing in a theatre booth animated by its specific atmosphere, the elderly actors’ drama overlaps that of the old couple, i.e. of the characters they play. To get used to the idea of reaching the end, the two old buffoons personify Death as a dear character: explorer Emil Racoviță, whose life they found fascinating.
Performance in Romanian, with translation into English.
Performance not recommended to audiences under 12.
