Cast: Dominique Scheer, Yvette Caldas, Serge Noel, Gregoire Bourbier, Josephine Fresson, Marc Beaudin
“The Bald Soprano” is the first play written by Eugène Ionesco. Directed by Nicolas Bataille, the opening happened on May 11th 1950, at Théâtre des Noctambules. After difficult beginnings, this show got a revival on February 16th 1957, at the Theater de la Huchette for an uninterrupted success.
Eugène Ionesco, with “The Bald Soprano”, talked about an “anti-play”. The Smiths, a traditional Londoner family, invite the Martins to their house. An awkward Pendulum, a Maid who takes herself for Sherlock Holmes, two couples with ridiculous remarks, a confusing Captain of the firemen: a brilliant and subtle autopsy of the contemporary society.
“The Bald Soprano”, together with the “The Lesson”, is one of the emblematic pieces of the theatre of the absurd. Nearly 19,000 performances, more than two million spectators.
Performance presented in French, with translation into Romanian and English.
Now in its 60th year the Ionesco Show continues to hold the world record for the show that has been played non-stop in the same theatre, performances have been put on and watched by over 2 million spectators.
