George Banu in dialogue with Christophe Sermet and Vlad Russo
Christophe Sermet was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1971. After studying graphic design at the School of Applied Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds, he moved to Brussels where he graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in 1996. He has worked as an actor both in theatre and film.
But his main activity is that of theatre director. Since 2008, he is an associated artist at the Rideau de Bruxelles, one of the well-established and renowned Belgian theatre companies. He is also the artistic manager of the Compagnie du Vendredi, a Brussels based theatre company.
He mostly works with contemporary texts, but also revisits classic plays, using a modern theatrical language, imagining spaces which are at the same time elementary as well as concrete. To achieve this, the intensive work with the actors is of great importance.
In 2015 he won the Belgian Press Award for Best Play with “Vania!”, his adaptation of “Uncle Vanya” by Anton Chekhov.
