Starting from the play “The Swan Song” – which Chekhov considered the shortest drama in the whole world – director Alexa Visarion created his own stage version after texts of Chekhov and Shakespeare, driven by his desire and ambition to bring together the two playwrights who conveyed, each in his unique style, the tragicomic existence of the human being.
The performance is an homage to the Theatre and the Actor. Ilie Gheorghe is the Actor, the one who is forever on stage. Marian Râlea is the prompter, always unseen by the public, but who now becomes the stage partner of the Actor, in a dialogue that reconstitutes fragments from the great dramatic texts. “The Night of the Buffoons” is a mixture of laughter and cry, drama and buffoonery, melancholy and violence. A performance made equally of words and silence. And at the end, just as the director himself, Alexa Visarion, would say during rehearsals, “all that’s left is the echo”.
Performance presented in Romanian, with translation into English.
