Shakespeare, Again and for All Time
Octavian Saiu in dialogue with Nigel Townson and Constantin Chiriac
Dr. Nigel Townson is Director of the British Council in Romania. He has a background in modern languages and linguistics and has taught English language and cultural studies at university level in Portugal, Spain, Kosovo and Romania, where he taught at Babes-Bolyai University for seven years in the 80s and 90s. He designed and led the MA in British Cultural Studies which, in 1994, became the first full MA programme at the University of Cluj-Napoca and is still a hugely popular programme today. Nigel gave up teaching to join the British Council, working for eight years in Africa and then in Armenia and Austria before returning to Romania as Country Director in 2009.

Nigel comes from a theatrical family and worked part-time in television whilst still a student. He admits he lacked the patience and commitment (and talent) to make a career out of it, however, and his highlight was a small part in the classic British soap opera Coronation Street, where he played ‘’a handsome and charming French waiter’’. But that was a long time ago….
