Data Tavadze is an emerging force in the multifaceted world of Georgian theatre. His „Women of Troy” is a work for five actresses, for the Royal District Theatre in Tbilisi. Data Tavadze took Euripides’ tragedy as the starting point for the true stories of Georgian women from the 1990s to today and of their experiences in wartime: their distress has often been ignored; their complaints have not been listened to. Data Tavadze’s work aims to give a voice to Georgia’s history in the post-Soviet era. „Women of Troy” was premiered in May 2013 at the Swedish Biennial for Performing Arts in Jönköping. Public interest was so great that an extra performance had to be organised. „The performance is stunningly beautiful. But its aesthetic quality creates no barriers between the women and the audience. The play is timeless and agonizingly relevant. But there is scope here too for pleasure and for high spirits; and once again I am reminded what fantastic actors Georgia has.” (Margareta Sörenson in Expressen).
