Mario Martone and Mario Tronco have always declared their desire to work together and the idea of working on Bizet’s masterpiece came out as a perfect opportunity to do it. Theatre, and in particular Opera Theatre, was always considered by these two artists has the ideal field where they can undress from their usual roles and start a new way to perform art: experiments made by a fusion of theatre, music, poetry and rhythms. To work on the script, they called Enzo Moscato, one of the most lyrical voices of the Italian contemporary theatre: he wrote the text of this Mediterranean fable starting, of course, from its literary sources (Henri Meilhac, Prosper Merimée and Ludovic Halévy). The story of Carmen is gloomy contemporary: a tragedy that is still happening nowadays, a clear example of what in Italy was once called „delitto passionale” (passionate murder) and that today is defined as “femminicidio” (the killing of a woman). Mario Martone is bringing the piéce closer to contemporary themes, entrusting on the talent, the faces and the innate theatricality of the musicians of the Orchestra of Piazza Vittorio, an ensemble internationally well-known, made up by artists, cultures, traditions, memories, ancient and new sounds, unknown instruments and universal melodies. Carmen is an opéra-comique, inspired by the gipsy music, so the work is underlining its popular influences: the arrangement, signed by Mario Tronco and Leandro Piccioni, has the intent of lay bare the composition, to make it as simple as possible and to understand where its emotional heart is hidden.
