"The Mountain Giants" can be rightfully considered a veritable artistic testimony of Pirandello, the conclusion of a journey ended gloriously. This myth proposes a debate on the subject matter of the fate of art and artists. Two stances clash, two ideals: the one of the mage Cotrone, the defendant of art rejoiced in solitude, far from people incapable of seizing its greatness, and the one of Ilsa, the Countess who does not accept pleasure for the sake of pleasure, but fights to bring her art in the midst of crowds. The world of the artistic myth is the world of the poets' dreams, the fantasy world where all thoughts take shape and ideas rise. At this fantasy feast, the characters are coming to life effortlessly. Just as Cotrone is the true essence of the pirandellian hero, capable of living in his mind a thousand lives, Ilsa is the essence of his heroine, who needs people and knows that only for them art and life can have a purpose. Ilsa is herself abnegation and self-sacrifice. Her death is not only her liberation, but also her triumph
