History

"Radu Stanca" National Theatre in Sibiu is a public cultural institution subsidized by the Local Council of Sibiu. Though the official beginning of "Radu Stanca" National Theatre is dated on April 1st , 1948, when Sibiu Working - Class Theatre became a permanent theatre, the Sibiu theatre must be followed starting 1788, when the Thick Tower of the town defence wall became a theatre performance hall, where both the Romanian and the German departments share the stage nowadays.

Faust

The year 1956 marks the beginning of the German Department as part of the Sibiu State Theatre, which distinguishes itself through an intense and rich theatre performance repertory.

The Romanian and the German departments have been sharing the stage of the "Radu Stanca" National Theatre from the very beginning.

Among the most important personalities working at "Radu Stanca" Theatre, Radu Stanca - stage manager, essayist, and playwright - had such an important influence in this theatre life that the theatre was named after him. As a director, Radu Stanca staged plays from both the national and international repertory: from Caragiale and Delavrancea, to Molière, Gogol, and Chekhov, who constitute the basic elements of the Romanian Theatre. In this respect, we should mention the great success of the well-known performance "Hagi Tudose" by B. St Delavrancea, rewarded with The State Prize in 1953.

Starting with 1993 until today, there have been staged important plays of both Romanian and universal drama. During these years, plays like "Miss Nastasia" by G. M. Zamfirescu, "Night Asylum" by Maxim Gorki, "Uncle Vanya" by A. P. Chekhov, "The Chamber-maids" by Jean Genet, "The Picture" by Eugen Ionescu, "Dona Juana" by Radu Stanca, "Take, Ianke and Cadâr" by V.I. Popa, "The 7th Commandment" by Dario Fo, "The Suicide" by Erdman, and "Don Quixote" after Cervantes, have been produced.

Since 2000, "Radu Stanca" Theatre has witnessed national and international collaborations. Some well-known Romanian and foreign stage managers have been invited to Sibiu: Silviu Purcărete, Andriy Zholdak, Mihai Măniuţiu, Tompa Gabor, Alexander Hausvater, Radu Alexandru Nica, Florin Zamfirescu, Puiu Şerban, Anca Bradu, who have staged plays of a real artistic value: "Othello" by W. Shakespeare, "The Idiot" by F. M. Dostoyevsky, "Pilafs and Mule Scent" after The Book of the 1001 Nights, "The Job Experiment" after the Book of Job from the Bible, "Pantagruel' Sister-in-Law" after Rabelais, "I, Rodin" by Patrick Roegiers, "The Persians"  by Aeschylus, "Rusalka" by Antonin Dvorak, "Nora" by Ibsen,

International collaborations

Along the years, "Radu Stanca" National Theatre made several tours in Japan, Korea, Russia, USA, Canada and Europe, and participated in national and international theatre festivals: National Theatre Festival (Bucharest), Coup de Theatre (Iaşi and Bucharest), Classic Theatre Festival (Arad), Coup de Chauffe a Cognac (France), DonauFestival (Germany), The St Petersburg Festival, The Katowice Festival (Poland), Seoul Performing Arts Festival (Korea), Brest Drama Festival (Belarus), UTE Festival (Porto), Chalon dans la Rue (France), Napoli Teatro Festival (Italy), Goethe Festival (Germany), World Theatre Festival (Croatia) and many more.

The new management team of National Theatre "Radu Stanca" has initiated the process of staging some international coproductions, and coherent promotion programmes. 20 of the most important theatre critics have recognized "Radu Stanca" National Theatre as the best theatre in the country. In 2003, "Radu Stanca" Theatre in Sibiu was awarded as the Most Important Theatre in the Country. The "Othello" performance was rewarded with the UNITER prize for The Best Performance of the Theatrical Session and Radu Alexandru Nica received the UNITER Debut Prize for "Nora".

In 2008, "Radu Stanca" National Theatre was awarded the prizes for best actress in a leading role, best dramaturgy and montage at Festival de Teatro Clasico (Merida, Spain), where it presented the performance "Electra" after Sophocles and Euripides, directed by Mihai Măniuţiu, and the award for the best performance at ExPonto Festival (Ljubljana, Slovenia), where it presented „Pantagruel's sister-in-law" after Rabelais, directed by Silviu Purcărete.

"Radu Stanca" National Theatre is a repertory theatre that has a troupe of 50 actors who have a permanent employment contract. "Radu Stanca" National Theatre has an intense activity: 25 performances during a theatre session and between 10 and 14 premieres during a theatre session. This intense activity proves both the great number of theatre lovers and the possibility of the theatre to ensure a constant performing pace.

In August 2009, The National Theatre "Radu Stanca" Sibiu had a great success at the Edinburgh International Festival where it performed five times a sold-out Faust, after Goethe, directed by Silviu Purcărete. On this occasion, the actress Ofelia Popii was awarded The Herald Angel Award, for the best actress.
